Most Bass Angler's have made the sojourn to Penrith to fish in the Bass rich waters of the Nepean river. Launching from Tench reserve is usually fairly easy but I recommend that most kayak anglers stay away from the ski boat areas and stick to the 8 knot zones or the 4 knot area around the narrows. The reduction in traffic makes for easier fishing with larger numbers of fish constantly found to be in the quieter areas.
I've fished here since day one of my Bass fishing life and I love the place even though it can be hot & cold from one year to the next. My Biggest river Bass at 41cm was caught here a few years ago and I've had many recent captures around the 36cm - 40cm mark. Angler's really need to adapt quickly here as a lure that works well one season may not work the next but it's always worth starting with a surface lure something like a Halco Night Walker, an Eastcoast Wombat-Wizz or Sic-Cada. Once you've done some scouting around on the surface change to a small diver like Halco Scorpion 35 or Smak Rack Walker and probe the holes and caves for waiting Bass ! Usually if there are no fish in the shallow areas or hiding in the ever present weed beds that line the shore, you'll most likely find the fish in the deeper holes nearer to the centre of the river. If this is the case some medium size spinnerbaits like the 3/8oz Smak Tournaments, 3/8oz Cams StrikeZones have enough weight to get to the botton or you could use larger divers like the Halco Poltergeist or the new Super Deep Poltergeist to get down into the strike zone. All in all the Nepean river at Penrith is one of the best Bass waters for Kayak fishing in Sydney with upwards of 30 legal bass often caught in a 5 hour session.
