Port Hacking

Situated within the Sutherland Shire, Port Hacking is one of the most pristine waterways you could fish. From its mouth just south of Cronulla, to its upper reaches at the weir at Audley you'll find a multitude of species to chase. Kingfish, Jewfish, Tailor, Salmon, Frigate Mackerel, Bonito, Snapper, Bream, Luderick, Flathead, Whiting, Leatherjackets, Bass, Estuary Perch and even occasionally, tropical species such as Mangrove Jacks, can be found within her waters.

Two excellent launching facilities are the ramp at Greys Point and the ramp near Yowie Bay marina. Both have plenty of parking and Greys Point has an excellent picnic area (Shallow Rock Reserve) right beside the river. Other boat ramps are at Turriel Point and Tonkin Park in Gunnamatta Bay.

Yowie Bay allows for easy access to the vast weed beds that are in the middle of the Hacking (near Costens Point) and many big bream have been caught here at high tide while slowly rolling Smak Rack Walkers just above the weeds. Try the edges for flathead waiting in ambush. Keep an eye out for salmon and tailor ripping into schools of baitfish in the deeper channels, too. Yowie bay also has plenty of boats and pontoons which are always worth flicking a soft plastic around.

At the mouth of Yowie Bay there is some deep water and kingfish patrol this area in summer. That is why you'll sometimes see a kingie race out from a boat and grab your bream lure and, usually, take it home for a keepsake!

Greys Point offers calmer water (there is still plenty of boat traffic though) and casting over the flats will tempt flathead and if using the Berkley Sandworms in the Camo colour, whiting too. The rocky shores hold good populations of bream, especially further upstream near the old fish pools. Take your time and work the plastics slowly to get good results. And remember the old saying, 'No run, no fun', so tidal movement is a must. For surface action, try the shallow creek opposite the ramp at high tide and flick East Coast poppers and fizzers right up near the shoreline and mangroves.
